Umhlanga Rocks, Durban
Cooked over wood,
served by the sea.
Lead-wood coals, KZN produce and a five-course Ember Menu, twenty metres from the promenade. Braai heritage, cooked with intent.
The chef
Anele Dube
"My grandmother cooked everything on one fire in Pinetown. I have just added a wine list."
Anele trained in Cape Town and cooked in London for six years before coming home to the coast. Salt & Ember opened in 2023 with a single wood-fired hearth and no gas line. The kitchen buys from farms and boats within 200 km where it can, and names them on the menu.
Private dining
The Coal Room
A glass-walled room beside the hearth, with its own fire and a table cut from a single fallen jacaranda.
